Non-fiction Books

The power of non-fiction writing

Non-fiction books can be extremely powerful. They can provide a platform for those with unique skills and interests to pass on that knowledge to a larger audience. They also can provide a space for those with unique life experiences to share their journey, both as catharsis but also to share helpful insight for those who may be going through similar aspects.

Some common types of non-fiction

History books focus on telling a true account (though can contain author perspective) with well-researched facts. They can be about a range of topics, including local towns, families, businesses or professions, specific eras, important events, and more. History books can include photography, maps, infographics, letters, excerpts from historical sources, interviews, and more to establish reliability.
Biography is written in the third-person typically about someone other than the author.
Autobiography and memoir is written about the author themselves.
Travelogues focus on the author’s experiences while travelling somewhere (similar to a memoir but centred around the main theme of travel and cultures).
Travel guides, on the other hand, recount experience but also focus on practical tips and instructions for other potential travellers to that specific destination.

Both often include elements such as maps and photography of the local scenery, people, and nature.

Self-help books can address a range of different issues and topics that people commonly struggle with or need guidance for. These topics often include business success, personal self-confidence, developing good habits, space organisation, relationships, mental and physical health, dieting, financial guidance, and more.
They feature useful information backed up by personal anecdotes, statistics and research, or recounts from others who have came across this problem themselves and found a solution.

Guides and how-to’s are more specific than a self-help book, focusing less on the broader picture and more on a specific set of skills. They include tutorials for readers who want to develop in a certain area, whether that be for business professional looking to expand their expertise or home-hobbyists looking for things to do.
